Dakota County Law Blog

A family law blog with real world legal advice

Talking to an experienced family law attorney is very important if you are faced with a legal situation that will likely have a big impact on your family.  I was at the law library today, looking over some case law and information about divorce, child custody, and child support when I couldn’t help but over hear a woman asking the law librarian for help filing her divorce.

The woman asked many common questions that I would suspect a lot of people have when trying to navigate the complicated legal system.  To be perfectly honest, I get confused sometimes when trying to read the law and various legal rules.  In my opinion, there are simply too many of them.  How could somebody who isn’t trained in the law even begin to understand them?

This woman talked about how she had a job and couldn’t find time to attend a once-a-week class hosted by the local legal aid on filing your own divorce. Furthermore, the law librarian simply told the woman that the classes were full right now.  The woman seemed very perplexed and wanted help.  The law librarian, who is not an attorney, simply could not help the woman.

I wanted to say something, but I am not taking on new cases at the moment and I didn’t feel comfortable giving legal advice outside of a law office.  Lawyers are very unfomfortable giving out unaksed for advice.  But, I wanted to help.

Navigating the legal system is difficult.  Getting the result you deserve out of your divorce, child custody, child support, or other family law situation is something you need a Apple Valley family law attorney for.  I can’t stress that enough.
